Microchipping

What is a Pet Microchip?

  • A pet microchip is a tiny, permanent electronic ID, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted just under your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades.  Each microchip carries an unique identification number that can be read by vets, shelters, and council rangers.  When scanned, this number links to your contact details on a pet registry.

How Microchips Work

  • Microchips don't contain a battery.  Instead, they use a passive computer chip that activates when a scanner passes over it.  The scanner's electromagnetic field powers the chip, which then sends the ID number back to the scanner's display.

Thermal Microchips for Stress-Free Care

  • Some advanced microchips can also read your pet's body temperature.  As a Stress Free accredited clinic, we use these thermal microchips so your pet's temperature can be checked quickly and comfortably - no rectal thermometer required.  A simple pass of the scanner does it all.

Why Microchipping Matters

  • We strongly recommend microchipping every pet.  It helps:

  • Reunite lost animals with their families

  • Identify pet ownership

  • Comply with Victorian lows and local council regulations

Microchipping Requirements in Victoria

  • All cats and dogs sold or given away in Victoria must be microchipped, including those from breeders (even accidental litters), shelters and rescue groups.

  • All cats and dogs must be microchipped before being registered with a Victorian local council for the first time.

  • Pets aged 3 months and over must be registered with the council where they live.  Failure to comply may result in fines.
