General Surgery for Pets

General surgery is a routine but important part of veterinary care.  Whether your pet needs a planned procedure or treatment for an unexpected issue, our team is committed to making their experience as safe, smooth, and stress-free as possible.  We use modern equipment, gentle handling, and tailored anaesthetic protocols to ensure your pet's comfort from start to finish.

What Types of Surgeries Do We Perform?

Our clinic performs a wide range of general surgical procedures, including:

  • Desexing (spey / neuter)

  • Wound repair after accidents or injuries

  • Lump and mass removal

  • Gastrointestinal surgery, such s removing swallowed objects

  • Bladder surgery, including bladder stone removal

  • Ear and skin surgeries

  • Abscess treatment and infection management

  • Minor orthopaedic procedures

If your pet needs as more specialised or complex operation, we can arrange referral to an experienced specialist surgeon.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

We understand that surgery can feel stressful - for you and your pet.  Our goal is to make the experience as smooth, safe, and comforting as possible.  Here's what you can expect from the moment you arrive to the moment your pet goes home.

Before You Arrive

Fasting Instructions

Most pets need to fast overnight

  • No food after 9pm the night before surgery

  • Water is fine overnight but remove it 2 hours before admission

Your booking confirmation will include any special instructions for your pet.

Medications

You will have been dispensed some pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVP).  This is to be given 2 hours prior to admission.  This medication helps alleviate stress your pet may experience being in an unfamiliar environment.  By reducing their stress levels, we can reduce the amount of anaesthesia they may receive, also giving them a more positive experience.

If your pet is on any other medication, please check with us beforehand about whether to give the morning dose.

Admission Appointment

When you arrive, a nurse will greet you and go through an admission form covering:

  • Your pet's recent health

  • Any current medications

  • The planned procedure

  • Estimated costs

  • Your contact details for updates during the day

This is also a great tie to ask any questions or discuss any concerns - big or small.

Your pet will then be settled into our surgery ward with pet appeasing pheromones, warm bedding, and one-on-one attention from their dedicated nurse.

Pre-Anaesthetic Checks

Before surgery, your pet receives:

  • A full veterinary examination

  • Pre-anaesthetic blood testing (if recommended or required)

  • Intravenous fluids

  • A personalised anaesthetic plan

During Surgery

Your pet receives one-on-one nursing care for the entire procedures.  Their dedicated nurse continuously monitors:

  • Heart rate

  • Blood pressure

  • Breathing

  • Temperature

  • Oxygen levels

  • Depth of anaesthesia

Our surgical team works gently, efficiently and with your pet's comfort and safety at the centre of everything we do.

One-on-One Nursing Care

From admission to discharge, your pet receives dedicated, one-on-one nursing care.  A trained veterinary nurse stays with your pet throughout their stay, during and especially after surgery - providing reassurance, comfort, and continuous monitoring.

During surgery, we use advanced equipment to track heart rates, blood pressure, breathing, temperature,  and oxygen levels.  Your pet's nurse remains by their side for the entire procedure.

Recovery Time

After surgery, your pet is moved to a warm, quiet recovery area.  Their nurse stays right beside them as they wake up, monitoring:

  • Vital signs

  • Pain levels

  • Comfort and body temperature

  • Hydration

  • Anxiety or restlessness

Many pets wake up relaxed and simply curious about their surroundings.  They remain under one-on-one supervision until they are fully awake and stable.

Pet owners can provide some of their pet's usual food to be fed once they are able to eat while in hospital.

Going Home

When your pet is ready to go home, we will:

  • Go through their discharge instructions

  • Explain pain relief and medications

  • Discuss wound care and activity restrictions (if needed)

  • Answer any questions you have

  • Arrange a follow-up appointment if needed

We want you to feel confident and supported as you care for your pet after surgery.
